Local Author Holds Poetry Workshop

Last year when Trenae Sumter began her first teen poetry contest, she had a goal of helping teenagers appreciate the written word. While judging the entries, she became enthralled with the young poet’s work, and considered them to be talented wordsmiths. “I found myself envying their extraordinary ability.” Six years ago she began writing poetry that became a means of coping and expressing herself unlike other genres, and wants to share her joy in the healing art with teens. Poetry Basics will be held at 4:00 PM at the Ponca City Library September 12th.

A native of Oklahoma, Trenae has lived in Ponca City for twenty-nine years, but her childhood was spent on a ranch near Fairfax. “I had two passions growing up. Reading, and horses. While riding I made up western stories, and couldn’t wait to get back to my books.” Her largest influence were the western short stories by Dorothy M. Johnson, the novels of Zane Grey, and of course, romance. Although her first novel to be published is not a western, her heroine grew up on a ranch near Houston, Texas.

To be released in November by Medallion Press, Sumter’s debut novel is a Medieval time-travel. “Knight’s Legacy” is the story of Catherine Terril, a stuntwoman working on a film in a castle in Scotland. Walking through a magic door, she finds herself embroiled in a dangerous struggle in the thirteenth century. The only way out of a threat to her life is marriage to Roderic de Montwain, a leader of a band of misfit Scots that have a reputation for being the finest warriors in the Highlands. Cat agrees to the match, her fear of the murderous Calum Mackay inciting the conclusion that the handsome Montwain is preferable to dying before she can once again find the portal that will lead her home.

A romance fan herself, Trenae cherishes a love story with action, intrigue and heart-tugging emotions. It is her sincere hope that all romance fans feel the same about Roderic and Catherine’s story.
